Cathay Pacific Suffers Major Data Breach

Around 9.4 million customers are affected by it

Hong Kong-based airline Cathay Pacific reported today that their servers suffered a major breach, leading to the information of 9.4 million customers stolen by hackers. According to their latest report, identity card numbers, names, dates of birth, and postal addresses may have been compromised due to the breach.

In addition, 403 expired credit card numbers and 27 credit card numbers with no CVV numbers were exposed, though there’s no word yet if active credit cards numbers were compromised. No passwords were compromised by the breach.

In a statement, Cathay Pacific said that “The company has no evidence that any personal information has been misused. The IT systems affected are totally separate from its flight operations systems, and there is no impact on flight safety.”

In an interview by The Verge, Webroot senior security analyst Randy Abrams explained that the Cathay Pacific breach is big because it took the company six months from the time the breach occurred before announcing it to the public. In addition, the amount of data stolen is bigger compared to the cyberattacks against Delta, British Airways, and Air Canada.

Customers who might be affected are advised to visit http://infosecurity.cathaypacific.com/ or call and email Cathay Pacific directly.
