Do We Need Physical Keyboards Back? Clicks For The iPhone Thinks So

CES is about to kick off in Las Vegas next week, but a new accessory is making the news today ahead of the show. Clicks, as it’s dubbed and marketed by tech YouTuber Mr. Mobile (Michael Fisher), is an accessory for the iPhone that gives you a physical keyboard via a removable case.

Clicks Technology, the company behind the new accessory, says it worked with prominent YouTubers like Fisher and Kevin Michaluk who runs the channel CrackBerry Kevin to make the accessory. Clicks runs off of the iPhone’s battery so there’s no need to charge it, and the company claims that the phone is still magsafe capable even while the case is connected.

The idea of getting a physical keyboard with a phone isn’t new – BlackBerry tried exactly that with some of their phones, namely the Key2, which ultimately flopped in the market. The Clicks tries to address the issues of the Key2 by being a removable accessory, not to mention being for one of the most popular phones available today. The question remains though – do we need it?

As someone who grew up with physical keyboards on phones and who desperately wanted the Key2 to work, I think we’re all used to typing on screens enough that devices like the Clicks are more of a novelty rather than a necessity. We’re well past the age of the physical keyboard that almost everyone instinctively knows how to type on any touchscreen by now. The Clicks also makes the iPhone physically bigger, though the company argues that you’re getting some of the screen real-estate back that’s usually covered by the virtual keyboard.

At the end of the day though you’ll have to decide if the added size and bulk of the Clicks is worth the physical keyboard that you’re getting out of it. The Clicks will have two colors at launch – Yellow and Gray, with the latter being available for the Founder’s Edition round of the product. It’ll be available for both the iPhone 14 and iPhone 15, and will be priced at $139 (Php 7,747)
