Beating what Samsung and even Apple currently have to offer for their devices, Google announced that both the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro will get 7 years of software updates. That is the best software update commitment to date, and it sets a new standard for Android manufacturers to step up when it comes to updates.

On average, most Android phones get 2 major updates and 3 years of security updates–though brands like Samsung, Xiaomi, and OPPO have stepped up their commitments by providing at least 3 major updates on their mid-range and flagship devices. Apple, on the other hand, would commit to 4-5 major iOS updates on its devices–but they roll out security updates for older devices occasionally.

With the Pixel 8 series, Google’s software update commitment means that both devices will have full support until 2030. That also means it’s possible for the Pixel 8 series to receive up to Android 21–or up to Android 19 at the very minimum. Beyond software, Google also commits to offering the same level of hardware support as well, ensuring that they will have parts for the Pixel 8 series until 2030 at the very least.

This move is a win for consumers, as it will push manufacturers to improve their software and hardware support so that their customers can use their devices for a longer period. Considering that people have upgraded less frequently over the past few years, longer software support means that people can hold on to their devices longer without worrying about planned obsolescence.
