Huawei Announces the Cutting-Edge Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro

Both variants introduce several industry-first features

It is that time of the year, and Huawei unveils its latest Mate phones with the Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro. Headlining for both phones is the Kirin 980 processor—Huawei’s flagship in-house silicon that is made using the 7nm process and comes with two NPUs for improved AI functionalities. The new processor has many firsts, including the first to use Cortex-A76 cores and the first to use a Mali-G76 GPU.

Just like the P20 Pro, both Mate 20 variants boast of a triple rear camera setup. The Mate 20 has a 16-megapixel 17mm f/2.2 ultra-wide-angle camera, 12-megapixel 27mm f/1.8 wide-angle lens, and an 8-megapixel 52mm f/2.4 telephoto camera. The Mate 20 Pro steps things up with a 40-megapixel 27mm f/1.8 wide-angle camera, 20-megapixel 16mm f/2.2 ultra-wide-angle camera, and an 8-megapixel 80mm f/2.4 telephoto camera.

Both Mate 20 variants introduce a few firsts for Huawei and the rest of the tech industry: 40W wired fast charging, 18W wireless fast charging, reverse wireless charging, and a Nano Memory (NM) card format for storage expansion. The new memory card is as small as a NanoSIM, and provides speeds of up to 90mbps.

Both have a metal and glass build, and Huawei uses a Hyper Optical pattern which they claim makes the Mate 20 Pro and Mate 20 tougher against drops and resistant to fingerprint smudges.

Several key features differentiate the Mate 20 Pro from the Mate 20: the latter gets a 6.53-inch Full HD+ IPS RGBW display with a tiny notch, a 4000mAh battery, IP53 rating, and a conventional rear-mounted fingerprint scanner. The Mate 20 Pro, on the other hand, gets a smaller 6.39-inch OLED panel with a Quad HD+ resolution and a bigger notch to accommodate a 3D facial enhancement system. You lose the headphone jack on the Mate 20 Pro, but gain other features such as IP68 rating, in-display fingerprint scanner, and a bigger 4200mAh battery.

Both phones come with Android Pie out of the box, along with EMUI 9. Huawei’s newest overlay introduces on-display gestures, a simplified settings menu,
