Nothing Brings iMessage to Android

Nothing Brings iMessage to Android

Despite Google’s numerous calls for Apple to adopt Rich Communication Service (RCS), the latter’s iMessage platform continues to cause fragmentation with messaging. Nothing thinks that Android phones can have access to iMessage, which is why it is bringing its Chats platform to the Phone (2).

Nothing brags that its Chats messaging app is the first of its kind that supports both RCS and iMessage, making the Phone (2) the cooler Android device that can communicate with any iOS user without any issue.

To make this workaround possible, Nothing Chats is based on Sunbird, which claims itself as a unified messaging platform that does not need any Mac or iOS device for Android devices to communicate using iMessage. Sunbird’s goal is to become the single go-to messaging platform, and that means it also plans to integrate other messaging platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Telegram, and more into its app.

While Sunbird is currently on the waitlist, those who use a Nothing Phone (2) can use Chats starting Friday (November 17) and enjoy support for a number of iMessage features.

For Sunbird to work, one has to log in using their Apple ID. Sunbird assures that they won’t access your Apple ID or your iMessage chats and that all messages will be encrypted. In addition to that, Nothing notes that Sunbird will delete one’s Apple ID credentials after two weeks of inactivity.

Aside from needing a Nothing Phone (2) for Chats to work, its availability is limited to the US, Canada, UK, EU, Norway, and Switzerland in the meantime.

While the idea of having iMessage on an Android device is cool, there are a few risks associated with it. Aside from the possibility that Apple might take legal action against Nothing and Sunbird, there’s no official workaround for making iMessage available to non-Apple devices. Even if Sunbird’s claims are reassuring, we can’t vouch for the overall safety and security of Nothing’s Chats platform.

Signs of desperation really, like some gimmick. Who the heck would sign in with their Apple ID on some non Apple device?
