After the government has approved a 90-day extension for SIM registration, both Smart and Globe welcome the positive development and vow to intensify their SIM registration efforts.

“We welcome the 90-day extension of the SIM Registration deadline as discussed by DICT Secretary Uy today. It gives our subscribers more time to comply with the law and register their SIM, and gives telcos like ourselves and the government itself more time to reach more subscribers and campaign for SIM Registration,” PLDT and Smart Head of Group Corporate Communications Cathy Yang said.

Smart, for their part, has been all out in pushing its subscribers to register their SIM–even mounting a campaign on the consequences of not registering their SIM cards before the deadline.

With this 90-day extension, both telcos highly urge all of their subscribers to register their SIM as soon as possible. “We would like to appeal to our customers to register their SIMs as soon as they can. If you are having a hard time registering your SIMs, you can go to our Globe Stores and EasyHubs and we will provide the necessary assistance,” Globe Consumer Mobile Business Head Darius Delgado said.

Globe also said that their use of Emergency Cell Broadcasts to remind people helped in ramping up SIM registrations, as they were peaking at 1 million SIM registrations per day.

With regards to DICT Sec. Ivan John Uy’s proposal to gradually disable select services on unregistered SIM cards, Smart said that they are in discussions with the DICT, NTC, and other telco operators–though they think that it might be difficult to implement due to time constraints. Globe, on the other hand, has yet to give a statement on the matter.
