Hands-on with the Motorola Razr 2020!

We go hands-on with the Motorola Razr 2020!

The Gold Standard for Folding Smartphones?

The Motorola RAZR 2020 was proudly on display at the booth of Motorola at the on-going Consumer Electronics Show 2020 (CES 2020) in Las Vegas. We were able to snag some much needed hands-on time with this highly anticipated smartphone and we wanted to report back to you guys.

Before we get to the specifications and our initial take, please watch this video where we discovered the Motorola Razr as well as other amazing gadgets on display at CES 2020.

Now for the specs!

  • 2.7-inch GOLED External Display (800 x 600 pixels, 4:3 Aspect Ratio)
  • Qualcomm 710 Snapdragon Processor
  • 6GB RAM, 128GB Internal Storage

  • 5MP front-facing camera
  • Android 9.0

Stunning, Beautiful, but Potentially Lacking

The Motorola RAZR 2020 has pretty much nailed what we wanted with a smartphone that has a folding display — not for it to be a tablet or laptop wannabe, but for it to become smaller when not needed. The extra ultra-portability combined with the novel folding display and the nostalgia of the RAZR brand makes it a very compelling proposition.

However there are some glaring potential issues with the RAZR. The lack of wireless charging, a lackluster front-facing camera, no ultra-wide and zoom lens, no expandable storage, not using a top-tier processor, and no physical sim card kinda make it gimped. However if you think about it, the RAZR is not for gamers who demand top processing power and RAM. It’s also not for professional digital creators who need the best cameras. Ultimately this is a premium lifestyle smartphone primarily built to look and feel good in your hands.

Speaking of premium, the estimated SRP of the Motorola RAZR 2020 is a whopping $1,500 USD or roughly P75,000. It’s definitely not for everyone.

Should You Buy One?

The Motorola RAZR 2020 is truly stunning but it’s hard to recommend it especially with the $1,500 price tag. There are also a lot of reports of other brands that will bring in the same look at a much cheaper price (TCL Foldable Phone during CES). To be practical about it, you’re better off waiting for the next wave of foldable phones because their prices will be competitive and their bugs will most likely be minimized or fixed (curse of being a first-gen gadget).

PS: Lenovo bought Motorola several years ago. Just in case you guys don’t know.
