Increased Spending Helped Globe Improve Network Performance

In the past few years, telcos in the Philippines have become more competitive. Their increased spending for additional infrastructure is slowly paying off, and Globe has benefitted the most from it in terms of its overall network performance.

As reported by Opensignal, Globe spent a total of Php 101.4 billion on its mobile and fixed networks in 2022, which translated to 2,267 new 5G site and 13,600 sites upgraded to 4G. This is reflective of all the awards it got last April 2023 from Opensignal.

The result of this investment is a vast improvement in network performance for Globe, specifically in Video Experience and with users spending more time with an active connection. For Video Experience, Globe garnered a 41.2% of a very good experience–Smart and DITO got 36.2% and 32.1% Very Good experience respectively.

When it comes to time connected to 4G/5G, Globe saw an improvement from 89% in January 22 to 95% by November 2022–and maintained that rate since then. DITO saw a slight dip, while Smart has been consistent in being around the 90%. Overall, all three networks are excellent in keeping their users connected to 4G or 5G networks.

However, the same cannot be said when it comes to signal strength. Based on Opensignal’s data, Globe users spent less time with a poor network signal than Smart and DITO. As for the latter two, they have been statistically tied in multiple periods, with the period between September 2022 and March 2023 being the time DITO is trailing behind Smart.

The increased spending of Globe in 2022 proved to pay off in terms of elevating its overall network performance to be more competitive against Smart–who was leading the way back in 2021. DITO, despite being a new telco, is still catching up with the two major telcos in the Philippines.
