The Google Pixel 7 Pro Camera Bump May Have A Fatal Flaw

It’s not our first time writing on the Google Pixel 7 lineup, especially the Pro. We’ve written extensively on the leaks prior to release as well as its accomplishments in the smartphone space right after. There’s no doubt in our minds that it’s a desirable smartphone anyone would enjoy. However, there is one flaw of the device that’s difficult to deny: the Google Pixel 7 and Pro models may have a camera bump that you’d want to protect at all costs.

This comes courtesy of a test by JerryRigEverything, the established king of the art of durability tests.

The video doesn’t start off very well, as the YouTuber explains that the bump on his Google Pixel 7 Pro already has some scratches just minutes out of the box, even before the testing started. The way it protrudes should make it the first point of contact between the device and any surface, so the fact that it scratches this easily isn’t a reassuring one. Keep in mind that even with a case, this remains to be the contact point regardless.

He asserts that this bump could lead the Google Pixel 7 and Pro devices to look quite aged early in their life cycle. Anything can be abrasive – whether that’s a coin, sandpaper, keys, or other items in your pocket. Even cloth could be a determining factor with enough friction. Whether the Google Pixel 7 Pro here has its camera bump coated or anodized in a certain material, it fails to aesthetically protect this component enough to make a difference. However, the camera glass should be more than fine.

Other than the camera bump, the device is made out of class-leading materials. The Gorilla Glass Victus front and back prove to be tough nuts to crack, only marking scratches at high levels of pressure. The sides are also constructed of metal, which is a step above plastics or other materials used in previous Pixel devices.

Some believe the Google Pixel 7 and Pro lineup should have kept the glass material used in its predecessor’s camera bump. This may be true. However, the device remains to be a desirable one that stands at the top of its class. You’re getting supreme hardware and optimized software in one attractive package. Considering this, it still gets a thumbs up from us.

We’ll review the device once we get a unit in our hands.
