It will use a next-generation variant according to reports
Huawei’s Mate 20 family is one of the most-awaited phones for Q4 2018. While it is a given that it will use a Kirin 980 processor, new reports have emerged regarding the use of an in-display fingerprint scanner for the Mate 20 Pro. According to an article by BiometricUpdate, the Mate 20 Pro will be the first to use Qualcomm’s Ultrasonic In-Display Fingerprint Scanner.
As a second-generation model, Qualcomm’s solution can work through glass for up to 800 microns thick, compared to 300 microns on the legacy version. This is not the first time Huawei will be using Qualcomm’s tech, as the Honor 10’s ultrasonic fingerprint scanner is supplied by Qualcomm as well.
The same article states that Huawei has an exclusive license to the said technology until February next year—coincidentally around the time when Samsung will unveil the Galaxy S10 and S10+. This means that Huawei has first dibs on Qualcomm’s second-generation fingerprint scanner, and no flagships can utilize it for the time being.
