Sony Unveils a7C II, a7CR Compact Full-Frame Cameras

Sony has diversified its a7C line of ultra-compact full-frame cameras with two models: a proper a7C mark II (or a7C II for short) and a high-resolution a7CR.

Starting with the a7C II, this ultra-compact full-frame camera is seen as an alternative to the a7 IV, where you get the same 33-megapixel, backside-illuminated Exmor R sensor and BIONZ XR image processing engine. Like recent Sony cameras, the a7C II also gets a dedicated AI processing engine for handling features like subject recognition, real-time tracking, and AI-based auto-framing. With its autofocus performance, the a7C II can shoot up to 10FPS with full AF/AE tracking.

Speaking of its AI processor, Sony claims a 40% better performance for photographing animals and birds, a 60% improvement with Eye AF, and a 20% improvement for auto exposure.

As for the design, the a7C II gets an additional front dial, along with an OLED EVF with a higher 0.7x magnification (vs 0.59x on the a7C).

For video recording, the a7C II shoots 4K video with 7K oversampling, along with 4K60 in Super35 format, and Full HD at up to 120FPS. It supports 10-bit 4:2:2 color sampling, HLG, S-Log3 and S-Cinetone, and allows users to apply LUTs in the camera.

Moving to the a7CR, this one is all about megapixels–using the same 61-megapixel backside-illuminated Exmor R sensor found on the a7R IV and a7R V. This is even a bigger feat for the a7CR considering its compact body. Like the a7C II, you also get an AI processing unit to handle some features on the a7CR. It’s almost identical to the a7C II, but the a7CR’s burst speed is slightly lower at 8FPS with the mechanical shutter and 7FPS with the electronic shutter–which is necessary because of its sensor’s high megapixel count.

The video recording features are similar to the a7R V, but the a7CR omits 8K video recording–while not a big deal for now, it’s a nice feature to have for better cropping options.

The a7C II is priced at Php129,999 for the body only, while the a7CR is priced at Php 179,999. Those who will pre-order until September 30 will get a Peak Design Cuff and an extra NP-FZ100 battery with their purchase.
