The New WinAmp wants to be the Patreon of Spotify

Remember that announcement where WinAmp is set to return as a rival to Spotify? Llama Group, its current owner, reveals that the iconic music player will be more than just an app.

Aside from being available as a mobile-responsive music player to Android and iOS–with a planned release in Q3 of 2023–the new WinAmp aims to support artists by subscribing to them–on top of having access to WinAmp’s library. Their business model makes the new WinAmp sound like a mix between Patreon and Spotify.

Those who are hoping for the same customizable music player might be disappointed, as the interface looks similar to that of Spotify. Aside from that, WinAmp’s library is still small, with the majority of songs coming from indie artists from the US, Egypt, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, Thailand, Turkey, Australia, Europe, Argentina, and Brazil–where their music catalogs are locked behind a $1-a-month paywall.

While not everyone might be into discovering new indie music and supporting them, you can also play locally downloaded music and connect it to other music streaming services. While the desktop app is not in beta, it does feel unfinished as there are no podcasts or radio stations on the platform.

It still remains to be seen what will be the Llama Group’s direction for WinAmp, and if their Patreon-like business model will be effective in supporting music creators.
