We’ve been hush-hush about it since we got to see a prototype of the device at an exclusive MWC 2023 event, but we can’t keep quiet anymore: the OPPO Find X6 Pro is a smartphone with a BEAST of a camera. We’re looking forward to seeing it in the market and giving that optical system a try for ourselves. What’s all the hype about?
According to the team over at OPPO, they’ve aimed for the stars and gone for a “true DSLR experience” when engineering the cameras on this OPPO Find X6 Pro. We’ve heard this statement a million times from all smartphone manufacturers but it always falls short. However, seeing the hardware on this device’s optical system gives us some hope that photos taken with this device might actually be comparable with professional photos, in the right setting.
What hardware specifically? The headline enshrined in the rear circular camera module here is the 50-megapixel Sony IMX989 sensor, the same one used in Sony’s RX100 handheld camera. It’s a gigantic 1-inch sensor that should be able to capture more light and detail than ever before. Only a handful of devices have this equipped so far, but even fewer have fully utilized the sensor’s potential. We have faith that OPPO and Hasselblad will be working together to ensure that this piece of fancy hardware isn’t wasted with mediocre software and image processing – in addition to the onboard Marisilicon X chip.
Besides that, making its debut in the ultrawide lens is the 50-megapixel Sony IMX890. We know that we’re far beyond megapixel counts at this point, but this resolution trumps any other flagship ultrawide sensor by a mile or even more. We can’t help but imagine the improvements over the X5 Pro’s also 50-megapixel but older IMX766 version of an ultrawide shot. Even that was already impressive to begin with. OPPO promises none of the typical fish-eye distortion you get with ultrawide lenses, and ultimate low-light performance (another weak point for these cameras).
The telephoto lens, on the other hand, is also a Sony IMX890 with 3x optical zoom. OPPO claims that its Find X6 Pro will be capable of “Pro-level video,” befitting its moniker. A new portrait mode with increased levels of Bokeh will also be introduced courtesy of Hasselblad’s renewed image algorithms.
Another thing OPPO boasted at its event was 120x and hybrid zoom technologies, apparently not suffering from the same image degradation often associated with cropping into photos and videos. If there’s one negative comment we have from all these positives, it’s that 8K video recording has been eliminated. The company doesn’t believe that this feature has been utilized enough for it to be a core focus of the camera’s functionality.
Taking your selfies is a Sony IMX709 with raw domain HDR, AI noise reduction, and other features. It will top out video recording at Full HD, 60 FPS.
Other than that, the OPPO Find X6 Pro is what you’d expect from a flagship in 2023 with no expense spared. It’s carrying the flagship Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset bundled with at least 8GB of LPDR5X RAM and UFS 4.0 storage.
The display measures in at 6.82-inches with a 1440×3168 resolution and 2500 nits of peak brightness, with peak HDR brightness at 2200 nits. It also supports HDR10+, 1440Hz PWM dimming, and an LTPO adaptive refresh rate of 120Hz. The screen is composed of cutting-edge Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2.
Keeping things cool is Next-Generation Graphite Cooling with an advertised 84% reduced heat dissipation. Charging of the 5,000 mAh battery, meanwhile, can be performed either 100W SuperVOOC with a wire in just 20 minutes or 50W AirVOOC wirelessly in 52 minutes. OPPO’s improved Battery Health Engine promises 80% battery health after 4 years of normal use.
Colors come in this very popular brown/silver two-tone, a green-only, and a black-only option.
