Apple Files Patent for Mac Inside a Keyboard

While Apple is one of the brands that made all-in-one computers mainstream with the iMac, the Cupertino-based company is exploring other possible form factors. In a new patent filing, it seems that Apple is looking at part designs with a Magic Keyboard that has the internals you’d find on, say, a Mac Mini.

With newer Magic Keyboards now having a built-in TouchID sensor, the patent reveals that Apple wants to cram the internals of a Mac–logic board, WiFi/Bluetooth cards, SSD, and RAM–all inside a Keyboard while keeping a relatively thin profile.

In principle, Apple’s patent appears to be literally a laptop sans display. However, given how small M1 logic boards are–and that you may do away with a battery given that the patent is meant for desktop setups–Apple might be able to make its current Magic Keyboard thicker to accommodate all the internals (and thermal management solutions) inside its chassis so that users will only need a monitor and a mouse to have a fully-functioning desktop.

“A strong demand for portable computing devices which also deliver high performance has driven miniaturization and reduction in size of the once bulky computing components used to power and drive the devices,” the patent reads.

While the patent does not detail what kind of form factor Apple is planning, it’s possible that the Magic Keyboard with Mac internals might become the next iteration of the Mac Mini.
