Calm Down: Call Of Duty Modern Warfare 2 Isn’t A Remake Of The OG

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare drew a lot of nostalgia bombs when it was announced around 2019. This is because one of the most iconic CoD titles was also called Modern Warfare, although it was aptly titled CoD 4 by many during its November 2007 release period. The original was quickly followed up by Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 in 2009, which then went on to become one of the (if not the most) recognizable multiplayer games of the decade. The 2019 iteration (fans call it MW19) is now getting a successor, expectedly called Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2. However, before you all jump for joy, it is not meant to be a remake of the 2009 game.

This was well-established with the 2019 version of Modern Warfare. After all, CoD 4 was remastered back in 2017 for the current-generation consoles and PC. The game either came with the Call of Duty game at the time Infinite Warfare, was available as a standalone, and eventually became free on paid subscriptions such as PlayStation Plus. This saw the graphics being brought to modern-day standards which appealed to diehard fans of the game. It was amazing getting to redo the whole campaign and play some multiplayer a full decade later.

For some, it was a nostalgia trip – while others decided to play it more competitively. Unfortunately down the line, the hackers that plagued the original game found a way to break the Remastered version as well.

Anyways, the release of this 2017 version left no room for thinking if the 2019 release was going to be the exact same game. There are limits to rehashing content after all (ahem, GTA V). What we got in 2019 was something completely different, yet not inferior in any way, shape, or form. New Call of Duty players were drawn in like flies and you’ll see the comments sections being flooded with “Best CoD game ever” from both old and younger fans of the franchise.

The success of Call of Duty: Warzone and the Mobile game just spawned even greater hordes of newbie players, bringing back or even transcending Call of Duty’s glory days in the early 2010s. This all-new Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 title will then build on the success of MW19 while leeching off the brand recognition of the original game (despite having nothing in common).

We’re not sure if this was a marketing mishap they didn’t see coming or a brilliant tactic. The game is also being developed by Infinity Ward, the company also responsible for the first series of games. As a result, a surge of optimism is prevalent, with many believing that this game will encompass MW19, no matter how critically-acclaimed the former is. That’s a high bar to set but that much can be expected out of a series that brings as much profit (approximately $9.7 billion!) as Call of Duty does.

There are numerous reports that so much effort is being placed into this game – so much so, that they won’t produce a 2023 title after this one (and Warzone 2). We can then expect a fair amount of support and new content for the 2022 installment of Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 moving forward.

Which CoD game do you want to see a remaster of, though? MW2 would be great, but the first or second Black Ops games are pieces of work too!
