Huawei is Still the King in Smartphone Photography

With the launch of the P60 Pro early this year, Huawei is back on the camera king throne thanks to its groundbreaking innovations like a variable aperture system on the main camera and one of the best algorithms for low-light shooting. A number of flagship phones–even the iPhone 15 Pro Max–failed to dethrone the P60 Pro. After all, the Mate 60 Pro+, which is another Huawei phone–is the only one that managed to beat the P60 Pro’s cameras.

With an overall score of 157 in DxOMark, the Mate 60 Pro+ overtakes the P60 Pro’s cameras by one point, with Huawei maintaining its dominance in smartphone cameras as 2023 comes to a close. While the Mate 60 Pro+ has the same 48-megapixel main camera with a variable aperture system and 48-megapixel telephoto camera used on the P60 Pro, it has a more robust setup with a higher-resolution 40-megapixel ultra-wide camera.

While we don’t know how the Kirin 9000S stacks up against the P60 Pro’s Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, we’re sure that Huawei implemented the same photography algorithm on the Mate 60 Pro+ to make it a true camera king. Huawei’s XMAGE system is better on the Mate 60 Pro+ with the higher resolution on the main camera.

Despite the Mate 60 Pro+’s status as the new camera king, the main challenge remains to be availability: as of writing this article, the entire Mate 60 series are only sold in China, and Huawei has yet to give an update if it has plans of making any of the three variants available globally.
