Is Samsung Done With Curved Displays On Flagships?

Sincwe 2015’s Galaxy S6 Edge, Samsung has set a trend among flagship devices that a curved display is one of its key defining features. This has went on with the rest of Samsung’s Galaxy S and Note series through the years, and other brands followed through. Starting in late 2022, mid-range phones (and even budget offerings) have started adopting curved AMOLED displays as a key feature. With Samsung set to unveil the Galaxy S24 series in January 17, the Ultra will reportedly go for a flat AMOLED display.

While a lot are dismayed at the rumor–after all, it was Samsung who started the curved display trend–an alleged prototype of the Galaxy S24 Ultra confirms the rumors: Samsung appears to be done with curved displays on flagships.

In a post on Twitter/X, the said Galaxy S24 Ultra prototype has a thicker frame, further confirming its flat AMOLED display as rumored. There’s a mysterious button/slot on the right side together with the power and volume controls–we don’t know that it will do for now.

The same goes for the back panel, which is going to be flat and have a boxier look compared to the Galaxy S23 Ultra. Our hunch with why Samsung had to go for flat frame sides might be its use of a titanium frame. The standard Galaxy S24 and S24+ are also said to follow the same boxy design and allegedly use a titanium frame as well–though there are conflicting reports about this.

If this is indeed true, we expect future flagships to drop the curved AMOLED display and go for a more conventional flat panel. It’s not a bad thing: flat displays are more durable less prone to accidental touches, and the allure of curved displays are slowly being replaced by foldable displays.
