What To Expect During The Samsung Unpacked Event For 2022

It’s once again nearly time for Samsung’s annual Galaxy Unpacked 2022 event, where the South Korean tech giant reveals its flagship devices for the year. The team behind the brilliant Galaxy devices has finally set the date in stone over a YouTube video: February 9. The line to remember is “Break through the night” in reference to their new-and-improved nighttime photography.

Samsung always brings the heat to these events, but there are particular devices that the public is looking forward to.

I’ll start with the Tab S8, the continuation to their line of high-end tablets. It is highly speculated that there will be three devices in this lineup: S8, S8+, and S8 Ultra. The last one shockingly comes with a 14.6-inch display which already falls within the realm of convertible laptops. The vanilla S8 will sport an LCD display while the higher two models will come with the company’s signature Super AMOLED panels. As expected with most devices in this article, all are highly likely to pack the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. Read here for more detailed specs.

The S-series also gets a follow-up with the S22 lineup. Considering the wording that Samsung has used in their marketing with “noteworthy” as well as a “fusion” of the best of their devices so far, we can infer that the S-Pen will be making a comeback in the S22 Ultra.

As expected from Samsung’s top phones every year, these are speculated to hold industry-leading specifications which are a significant jump over the previous year’s. The range-topping Ultra has found its way in the rumor mill with a 5000 mAh battery and either Snapdragon or Exynos processor.

The last, but definitely the one people are keeping their eyes on is the Exynos 2200. Promotions for this chipset have been messy, but a trailer was released fairly recently with the tagline “Playtime is over.” The people behind the Exynos chips have had a hard time in the last few years due to their processors falling behind by as much as half a generation to their Snapdragon counterparts.

They’ve been plagued by temperature and throttling issues all this time, especially when they attempted to break away from the norm and use Mongoose cores in their processors. The situation was so horrific that even the Snapdragon models were sold in their home country of South Korea, which was a slap in the face to the team working behind the in-house chip.

The dark days may be over for Samsung though. There have been optimistic rumors circulating about the new AMD-collaborated GPU and how it leaves the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 in the dust. The CPU, meanwhile, has been very hush-hush so we’ll have to wait and see how it performs in the real world. We definitely hope that the product we see at Galaxy Unpacked 2022 is the culmination of their learnings from years of failure, so we can see them return to glory once again.
