The Karate Kid Gets a Sequel Comedy Series Outta Nowhere on YouTube Red

The Karate Kid Gets a Sequel Comedy Series Outta Nowhere on YouTube Red

The show will be dubbed Cobra Kai and will feature most of the original cast.

A recent Hollywood Reporter post just revealed that theĀ original The Karate Kid movie (yes, the 1984 nostalgia movie, not the Jackie Chan one) is getting a new sequel on exclusive video streaming service YouTube Red. Titled “Cobra Kai” and billed as a “10-episode half-hour comedy”, the sequel takes place 30 years after the film, where Ralph Macchio (the Karate Kid bully, played by Daniel LaRusso) and Johnny Lawrence (the “bad guy”, acted by William Zabka) are now karate dojo masters – with some serious issues.

Hollywood Reporter adds that Cobra KaiĀ ā€œrevolves around a down and out Johnny who, seeking redemption, reopens the infamous Cobra Kai dojo. It reignites his rivalry with a now-successful Daniel, who has been struggling to maintain balance in his life without the guidance of his mentor, Mr. Miyagi.ā€ Guess these guys really haven’t moved on from the whole All Valley Karate Championship debacle, huh?

The Bully and the Demon Sorcerer are channeling their ki for a Metsu Hadoken here.

Shenanigans will definitely ensue in this show, given its showrunners consisting of Josh Heald of the Hot Tub Time Machine films, and the duo of Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg, largely responsible for the Harold and Kumar movies.

We’ll have to find out in 2018, or when YouTube Red unveils a trailer, on how exactly nostalgic and/or comedic Cobra Kai will be. The show will be airing exclusively on subscription service YouTube Red.Ā

Meanwhile, to whet your nostalgia appetite, and in case you haven’t seen it, here’s a nice, introspective video on who the REAL BULLY is in The Karate Kid. HINT: It’s not Johnny.

Here’s aĀ somewhat hilarious response to the video above.
