Select Sandisk Extreme Portable SSD Drives Have Problems

When it comes to SSD drives, Sandisk usually is the go-to brand given its expertise when it comes to solid-state storage. However, it seems that the recent batch of Extreme Pro, Extreme Portable, Extreme Pro Portable, and even Western Digital’s MyPassport SSD are experiencing serious problems. How serious, you may ask? One of the editors from The Verge lost 3TB worth of footage from a 4TB Extreme Pro portable SSD. Yes, no one likes that kind of issue.

And the problems regarding these Sandisk Extreme drives have been an issue since early this year. Sandisk only acknowledged the problems last May and claims that only the 4TB version of the Extreme V2 and Extreme Pro V2 portable SSD drives are experiencing the bizarre issue of them suddenly wiping the user’s data–and worse, becoming unreadable. Despite Sandisk’s advisory, there are also reports that 2TB drives were experiencing the same problem. Sandisk only promised a firmware fix to address these issues–and it seems that several of its Extreme Portable SSDs are still experiencing the same problem.

Because of these recurring problems, it’s hard to recommend any Sandisk Extreme SSD for the time being–specifically the V2 version–until they have found the culprit to the problem. Do note that the affected SSDs are the V2 ones–I personally use a V1 Extreme portable SSD since 2021, and that drive still works very well for me without any issues.
