Intel’s 18-core Core i9 Extreme Has More Power Than You Need

But it’ll cost you 100K

Intel’s insane Core i9 X-series family was officially announced back in June, but the company didn’t offer too much in the way of technical details and pricing. That ends today – the chipmaker has officially unveiled specs and more importantly, pricing, for the their new silicon.

The 18-core i9-7980XE X-series processor has a base speed of 2.6GHz, and with their new Turbo Boost 2.0, clocks in a turbo clock of 4.2GHz. If that wasn’t enough, there’s also Turbo Boost 3.0 on tap, which increases speeds even more to 4.4GHz. With 18 cores and 36 threads, its the most capable consumer processor that Intel has ever released.

Going further down the line, the 16-core model will have speeds between 2.8GHz and 4.4GHz, while the 14-core version starts at 3.1GHz. Speeds go higher when there’s less cores in the CPU since there’s less heat to dissipate.

The new processors don’t come cheap, with the i9-7980XE costing a whopping $1,999, or 100K in our currency. That’s a lot of cash to drop for a single piece of kit, especially since you’ll probably also grab a new 2066 board to come with it as well when you buy it on September 25.
