OnePlus 8 and Newer Phones Get An Extended Software Update

As part of its efforts to update its policy on software upgrades, OnePlus announced that flagship phones from 2020 like the OnePlus 8 series will be getting an extended software update. Instead of only two OS updates and 3 years of security updates, the OnePlus 8 and 9 series (which include the T and R sub-variants) will be getting three OS updates and 4 years of security updates.

This coincides with Qualcomm committing to up to 4 years of updates for the Snapdragon 888. OnePlus’ updated timeline is even better, as it was able to provide the same length of updates for the Snapdragon 865-powered OnePlus 8 series.

Here’s a summary of the software update policy for all current OnePlus phones:

Three OS updates and 4 years of security updates:

  • OnePlus 9 Pro
  • OnePlus 9R
  • OnePlus 9
  • OnePlus 8T
  • OnePlus 8 Pro
  • OnePlus 8

Two OS updates and 3 years of security updates:

  • OnePlus 7 Pro
  • OnePlus 7T Pro
  • OnePlus 7T
  • OnePlus 7
  • OnePlus Nord CE
  • OnePlus Nord

One OS update and 3 years of security updates:

  • OnePlus N200 5G
  • OnePlus N100
  • OnePlus N10 5G

Aside from an extended software update policy for the OnePlus 8 series, OnePlus also clarified details regarding its integration with OPPO. As far as software is concerned, all global OnePlus phones will still use OxygenOS, while China variants will use ColorOS. However, OnePlus said that they are “integrating the codebase of OxygenOS and ColorOS,” which will take effect starting with Android 12.

While that may be bad news for long-time OnePlus users who highly regard OxygenOS as one of the best Android versions out there, the codebase integration will simply improve the stability of the platform–which is crucial in ensuring speedy and stable rollout of updates.

“We now have a larger and even more capable team of developers, more advanced R&D resources, and a more streamlined development process all coming together to improve the OxygenOS experience,” OxygenOS Product Lead Gary Chen said in his post.
