OPPO Improves its Under-Display Camera with Smaller Display Pixels

Being one of the first brands to announce an under-display camera tech back in 2019, OPPO has yet to launch a commercial phone with an under-display camera. While ZTE is already on its second generation of its under-display camera (USC), OPPO announced its latest iteration.

This time around, OPPO claims that their tech will allow for a selfie camera placed under the display without compromising the screen’s integrity. To make this possible, OPPO utilizes smaller pixels on the display to maintain the same 400ppi density throughout the whole OLED panel. The new OLED panel makes use of transparent screen wiring that is 50% the width of traditional wiring.

There’s also a pixel circuit driving each pixel, ensuring precise control betwen the screen’s brightness. This means that users will barely notice any color difference between the camera area and the rest of the display. In addition to that, a 1-to-1 pixel architecture increases the OLED panel’s lifespan by 50%.

In terms of photos taken by the latest USC version, OPPO shared a sample selfie image, and while there ae color artifacts present in parts of the photo, the overall image quality looks consdierably better than the one used on the ZTE Axon 20 5G.

Even if those claims from OPPO, however, ZTE’s Axon 30 5G–which uses an improved second-generation USC–is already official and is set to be available globally soon. We still do not know when OPPO will launch an actual commercial device with a USC solution, but we’re hoping to see a phone debut the tech by the end of this year.
