Qualcomm Might Switch to TSMC for Snapdragon 895+

While Qualcomm has already announced the Snapdragon 888+, a lot are quite dismayed by the fact that it offers a little upgrade over the vanilla Snapdragon 888. We can’t blame them either, as the global chip shortage has also affected Samsung–the company manufacturing both Snapdragon 888 variants–in ensuring a good supply for both chips. Despite this, Qualcomm is working on the next-generation Snapdragon 895 and 895+, with the latter having an interesting twist of being made by TSMC instead of Samsung. This information was revealed by Ice Universe, who has a good reputation when it comes to tech rumors.

While both upcoming flagship processors are expected to use a 4nm process, the vanilla Snapdragon 895 will utilize Samsung’s 4nm LPE/LPP node, which is said to provide improved performance at a smaller cell size. As for the Snapdragon 895+, Qualcomm is going back to TSMC, utilizing the Taiwanese chipmaker’s 4nm process. TSMC’s 4nm process will more or less be used for the upcoming A16 Bionic processors that will be used by the 2022 line of iPhones.

Snapdragon 888
There’s no much known about the Samsung-made Snapdragon 895 for now. Initial info reveals that it carries an internal code name SM8450 and will reportedly use Qualcomm’s X65 5G modem–which is also built using Samsung’s 4nm process. As for the CPU and GPU, the Snapdragon 895 will reportedly use ARM’s next-generation Cortex-X2 CPU cores and Mali-G710 GPU.
With the vanilla Snapdragon 895 and its Plus version to be made by different manufacturers, the performance difference might be bigger compared to previous generations. Aside from possibly addressing chip shortages (if it will still persist throughout 2022), WCCFtech notes that TSMC has a better node compared to Samsung.
