Aside from the much-awaited return of the Mate series of Huawei, one of the attention-grabbing news about the Mate 50 Pro is the fact that it is now the new DxOMark smartphone camera king. This is quite a feat, considering that Huawei’s latest premium flagship device does not have any Leica branding–BUT has an ace up its sleeve with its groundbreaking variable aperture system on the main camera.

Aside from the variable aperture system, you are also getting a 50-megapixel f/1.4-4.0 main camera with OIS, a 13-megapixel f/2.2 ultra-wide-angle camera, and a 64-megapixel f/3.5 telephoto camera with 3.5x optical zoom and OIS.

This got us curious: how good is the Mate 50 Pro against premium flagship phones like the Apple iPhone 14 Pro and the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra–both being behind Huawei’s latest flagship phone in DxOMark?

We took the Mate 50 Pro, Apple iPhone 14 Pro, and Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra for several tests, and to see how their cameras perform in different shooting scenarios. Shooting scenarios include portrait mode, daylight shooting, indoor shooting, and low-light shooting to confirm if DxOMark’s rankings got it right between these three premium flagship devices.
