Dell’s Concept Luna Will Allow You To Upgrade Your Laptop In The Future

In a nutshell: Dell’s Project Luna is a modular concept that allows for easy disassembly and re-assembly of laptops which may pave the way to upgradable components.

Imagine a world where you can quickly and easily swap out components of your laptop when it goes bad like you would your desktop PC, allowing you to easily fix broken parts or even upgrade components like motherboards, GPUs and memory without needing specialized tools or training. That’s what Dell is promising with Concept Luna, a fully modular and easily repairable laptop built with user serviceability in mind.

Project Luna isn’t something new Dell initially announced it last year but they’ve made a lot of progress on it this 2022. Specifically, Dell has further improved on the modularity of the concept, eliminating the need for adhesives and cables, and minimizing the use of screws. With the changes, almost anyone can disassemble the laptop down to its components in “mere minutes” the company claims.

International outlets like The Verge managed to get their hands on the current prototype, and they claim that they were able to break the laptop down to its major components without the use of tools – yes, that includes a screwdriver.

While Dell is emphasizing repairability and making it easier to recyle e-waste with Luna, the concept opens up the possibility of modular components in PCs that you can swap out when you want an upgrade. Need a screen with a higher refresh rate or more accurate colors? Swap it out yourself. Same with the keyboard, RAM, GPU and so on and so forth.

Right now Dell hasn’t really shared when they’d start selling laptops with the tech, or if they’ll be sharing it with other companies down the line – but we’re hoping it’ll be sooner rather than later.
