Replacable Batteries On Phones May Make a Comeback, Thanks To The EU

After years of having sealed, hard-to-replace batteries on nearly every phone that’s sold in the world, we may see the return of easily replaceable batteries on phones.

At least, that’s what’s the horizon for the EU, which has just reached a provisional agreement to overhaul rules on batteries. The agreement covers virtually all batteries, from the smallest ones on portable devices up to massive EV (electric vehicle) batteries used by electric cars made by Tesla and other brands.

Remember when replaceable batteries were a thing?

This new legislation will force companies to design phones so that batteries will easily be replaceable, which hopefully means easier repairs and replacements if the battery bloats or becomes defective.

Brands will have to quickly adapt to the proposed legislation though, considering there are designs that can’t be easily adapted to the changes. Foldable phones will be trickier to put replaceable batteries on, because they typically use two batteries in a complex arrangement bought on by their foldable nature.

Will we finally get the return of designs like the LG G3 and all the other phones a few years ago? Are you in favor of said legislation?
