TikTok Launches New Auto Captions System With Translation Tools

Back in 2021, TikTok was able to increase accessibility to its platform via the Auto Captions feature. This allowed for inclusive use of the application which garnered it even more users and has helped contribute to the app’s success as one of the largest today. Due to this success, the company has gone one step further and turned it into a global effort for support. As such, new translation tools have been added to reinforce the TikTok Auto Captions feature and give it more utility.

The first major change is giving app users more capabilities than ever before. The feature launched last year gave uploaders and creators the ability to turn on automatically-generated captions for their own videos. They could even go as far as editing these captions themselves to minimize errors in interpretation. This time around, the viewers themselves can toggle these captions even if the creator has not activated support for it. This ensures that those who are unable to hear the content will be able to access the full library of TikTok to the fullest possible extent, despite the possibility of errors here and there. We’re sure that the platform is doing its best to employ the most powerful text-to-speech technology to fuel this.

In addition to that, both closed captions and video descriptions can be automatically translated to the user’s preferred language. The options as of now include English, Portuguese, German, Indonesian, Italian, Korean, Mandarin, Spanish and Turkish, but there is a high chance that this roster will be further expanded in the future. It can be inferred that the goal of arming the TikTok Auto Captions feature with this addition is to enhance its global appeal and make it a unifying app for all cultures.

Even text stickers onscreen receive the same treatment. Whichever language is chosen for the aforementioned text content will also be applied onto the stickers embedded into the video.

This is all a huge leap in promoting diversity amongst the wide reach of the internet. If TikTok continues on this path, then overtaking the scale of Meta will reach an optimistic degree of certainty. The latter isn’t taking this lying down though – read here on how Facebook plans to combat this charge.
