While Instagram is working on a fundraising feature on its platform, TikTok confirmed that they are working on a new tipping feature that allows creators to receive gifts from their followers. While the most popular TikTok content creators are receiving tips when livestreaming, this new feature adds a Tips button on the TikTok user’s profile page.

In a report by TechCrunch, TikTok content creators need to have at least 100,000 followers and must be in good standing to be part of the limited test for the tipping feature. Once their application is approved, content creators will have a Tips button on their profile page, where their followers can give them direct payments.
Money received from the Tips button will go directly to creators and TikTok will not be taking a cut–at least for the time being. “We’re always thinking about new ways to bring value to our community and enrich the TikTok experience,” a TikTok spokesperson told TechCrunch.
The introduction of the Tips button is part of TikTok’s push towards monetization. Prior to this, TikTok has a hand in helping creators sign brand partnerships and sponsorship deals, on top of providing monetization for livestreams.
Aside from TikTok, Twitter has a similar feature called Tip Jar, which makes use of different payment platforms to support select Twitter users. Like with TikTok’s implementation, Tip Jar is available to a select group of Twitter users that include nonprofits, journalists, experts, and creators
