Apple settles with FTC, changes IAP rules
Apple settled with the United States Federal Trade Commission over a complaint filed by the FTC over Apple’s culpability in the unwitting in-app purchases made by children without the consent of their parents to the tune of $32.5 million.
But the case has already been settled by Apple back in June, reaching a settlement with the complainants and agreeing to refund IAPs made by their children. Their settlement with the FTC simply puts the entire issue completely to rest.
As a result of both settlements, Apple will now be modifying how IAP purchases are made, which requires whoever is buying through IAPs express, informed consent, as well as refunding at least $32.5 million dollars to affected customers. Redundant? Yes, but at least affected people are getting refunds of their hard-earned money.
