Jor-El in Man of Steel Portrayed by Russell Crowe
We’re moving on to a new line of 1/6th scale collectible figures since we already completed The Avengers with our recent purchase (Hawkeye). We’ve set our eyes on completing the major characters from Man of Steel since it was such a kick ass movie and there’s only one figure out right now (others to follow within this year). To kick our new collection off we got the biological father of Superman, the Kryptonian scientist, Jor-El!
Russell Crowe’s performance as Jor-El in this movie was well-received by critics and fans alike. His cool and firm voice made an excellent voice-over for the trailers and TV spots. His stoic yet warm nature also made him the perfect “lost father” figure to Superman. To refresh your memories on Jor-El check out the short clip of him reuniting with Superman in the clip we found below on YouTube.
It’s Really Russell Crowe!
When it comes to likeness, they nailed it! The head sculpt has a ridiculously insane resemblance to Russell Crowe! Just like with Jeremy Renner head sculpt, you can just change the clothes on this figure and you can get the different characters Russell Crowe portrayed in his movie career just because of how exactly they were able to copy the face. They were even able to get the hair (both top of the head and facial) right!
If you look really closely at the face, you’ll notice that they even put a sweat streak, lol. They also made it a point to get all the flaws, pimples, and wrinkles just so they can really make the sculpt look like the character in the movie.
It’s nice that they picked this cold and almost expressionless face for the figure. This is probably Jor-El’s face for 90% of the movie, hehe.
Limited Poses But Still Awesome
The figure came in Jor-El’s intricate Kryptonian robes. The level of detail put into the clothes is just crazy but we’ll get more into that later on in this post. Underneath the robes we have the textured body suit that’s very similar to what Superman and General Zod wore in the movie . Unfortunately they didn’t put the “S” logo on the suit (it’s just plain blue).
While there are a lot of articulation points there are only a few good ways to pose Jor-El. Without the accessories you can pose him with both hands behind his back or doing different hand gestures. In terms of accessories there are only two – a Kryptonian rifle and the Codex (skull). Here are a few photos for your perusal:
What we found really weird though was the stand that came with the figure. It’s very similar to the Hot Toys Dynamic Stand that’s meant more for figures that you want to pose flying or jumping. We can’t really recall Jor-El doing any of that in the movie except for his famous dive into the pool to get the Codex. The base is pretty sweet though as it has a nice texture to it and it has the “S” logo.
Stunning Level of Detail
As we mentioned earlier, the level of detail is just crazy! Everything from the robes, body suit, and accessories are designed very well. They used a lot of patterns and textures to give the figure more depth and character. For example, the gun has symbol carvings along the sides and the top. With the Codex we have the small gold bits. With the robes we have the intricate “S” logo up front.

Awesome right!?
Superb Fig, Now Bring On Superman and General Zod!
While there are limitations with the poses we feel that Hot Toys was able to do justice to the character in the movie. They captured a lot of the details perfectly, especially the head sculpt and the details of the accessories. We’ve placed an order already for Superman and he should be arriving in our HQ around January or February. General Zod, on the other hand, is due later this year. Can’t wait!!!
Jor-El is now available in some toy stores. There’s no specific SRP but the price range is usually anywhere from Php9,500-Php11,000.
