3D Gaming Experience With Acer SpatialLabs: Worth It Or Nah?

3D Gaming Experience With Acer SpatialLabs: Worth It Or Nah?

Initially pegged as a technology for gamers, Acer SpatialLabs 3D is a revolutionary new way to immerse yourself in the universe of your selected title. We finally got to try it out at Computex 2023. Here’s what we have to say about the entire experience.

The first order of business was to enter this tiny booth with sound insulation. We were expecting to find an elaborate PC gaming setup inside, but we were greeted by a friendly staff member, the Acer Helios SpatialLabs laptop, a desk, and a controller. That was it.

Then the staff member asked us to get seated, turned on the game, and toggled the 3D setting. It was a magical experience once you were in the right position to see the effect. It wasn’t only certain elements that floated off the screen – it was the setting itself, providing depth to the in-game scenery.

More importantly, the staff member told us to listen for where the sounds came from. It was easier to spot thanks to the “surround sound” effect provided by the room’s sound deadening. What was shocking was the fact that the sound was purely coming from the laptop’s two top-firing speakers. While gaming laptops are notorious for having terrible audio components onboard, this might just be one of those rare exceptions.

Based on our discussions, currently there are around ninety (90) titles supported by Acer SpatialLabs 3D. This library is only set to increase as more time passes. The game library can be accessed via the all-in-one program SpatialLabs TrueGame, which acts as the all-in-one hub for accessing and launching all 3D titles.

But what if you already have a gaming PC you’ve invested your entire life savings into? Don’t fret! The Acer SpatialLabs View monitors should meet your needs. You can do the same things, such as install SpatialLabs titles on any brand of PC as long as you have the monitor.

We first saw a single-monitor implementation for more everyday setups. Here, booth visitors were able to try out a variety of tasks both in 2D and 3D settings. With 2D mode, it was just like any display – and things changed with the click of a button.

There was also a triple-monitor arrangement present nearby. This is for hardcore power users who love to multitask and need the additional efficiency afforded by such a setup. It works just like any other triple-monitor setup.. until you flip the switch.

Connectivity options are via your usual USB and HDMI methods. There are no special dongles or wires here – making it accessible for just about anyone. The only real barrier is that SpatialLabs requires a bit of graphical performance to run. The specifics weren’t mentioned on the show floor, but this site indicates the bare minimum to be RTX 2080 levels of power. That’s definitely nothing to scoff at.

Overall, the Acer SpatialLabs 3D Gaming experience was a surreal one. It definitely showcased the possible future of gaming, considering that 3D was nothing more than a gimmicky quirk a decade ago. We finally have the technological oomph to make it work.

Our only comments are that prolonged sessions gave us a bit of nausea and headaches. It definitely takes a bit of time to get used to; but didn’t most people learn how to play FPS games that way? Also, if they could increase the angles so that the spectators behind the player would also see the 3D effect, then that would be great.

There is huge certainty that 3D will be a huge milestone for the gaming world, and Acer SpatialLabs will be a significant player in the market. What do you think?
