Don’t Expect Any M3 MacBook in 2023. Here’s Why

There are many reasons people are excited about the iPhone 15 series: Aside from the shift to USB-C and the rumored periscope camera on the Pro Max model, the iPhone 15 series will debut the A17 processor, which is said to be based on TSMC’s 3nm process. This brings in speculation that Apple will likewise debut the M3 MacBook line later this year since the M3 processor is based on a 3nm process.

However, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said that the M3 MacBook line is not happening in 2023–or at least it is not in Apple’s plans yet. An M3 iMac is not out of the picture yet, as Apple might have enough chips for it since the volume for desktop Macs is not as big as laptops.

As for the 3nm process, there are reports that TSMC’s yield is low–which explains why there are only a few manufacturers that confirm that they have a 3nm chip in the works. MediaTek did beat Apple to the punch with their announcement, while Apple is expected to use the 3nm process on the A17 for the iPhone 15 Pro series. Given the low yields of TSMC so far, those who want an M3 MacBook, M3 iPad Pro, or even an M3 iMac might need to wait a little longer.
