End of an Era: Intel to Retire Pentium and Celeron

Intel is slowly adapting to the times. After updating its Core i series processors with a hybrid core architecture, Intel thought that it is high time for them to retire the Pentium and Celeron lines for their entry-level offerings.

Intel has been using the Pentium branding since the 90s and Celeron branding since the 2000s, and that is set to change starting 2023. Moving forward, Intel will go for a straightforward “Intel Processor” branding—but will still retain its Core, vPro, and Evo labels. Intel Processor will become part of the brand’s “Essential” line, which consists of entry-level computers.

Intel did tell Engadget that there will be no new desktop processors under the Pentium and Celeron line for the first quarter of 2023, so we don’t know when Intel will drop both lines for good.

The decision for Intel to retire both Pentium and Celeron lines was expected, as the majority of computers (Chromebooks included) use at least a Core i3 processor. Most consumers would rather go for a computer with a Core i3 processor over one that uses a Pentium or Celeron processor—unless they are completely uninformed at what they are getting like in the case of DepEd’s controversial Php 60k Celeron laptops.
