Self-Cleaning Touchscreen Displays MIGHT Be a Reality with GM Patent

While some phone brands have shifted to using non-glossy back panels that save us from the annoyance of constantly wiping away smudges, the same can’t be said with touchscreen displays. Given with how often we would use our smartphones for playing games and watching videos, it’s inevitable that our displays will be laden with smudges over time. However, General Motors has a patent that allows touchscreen displays to be self-cleaning.

GM’s patent is relevant given that most modern cars are going to replace almost all physical buttons with one large display, though we will not be surprised if their self-cleaning touchscreen display will make it to smartphones and tablets as well.

The self-cleaning design does not involve some microfiber cloth-holding arm that will constantly wipe the display; instead, the display will have an additional violet pixel that’s invisible to the human eye and an equally invisible photocatalyst screen coating. According to the patent, the metal-oxide-based photocatalyst will react to the screen’s violet pixels, where moisture in the air will break down the organic materials left behind in fingerprints, as well as oil residue and grease from the fast food we all eat.

The whole idea sounds like rocket science, but if GM does pull this off for its future vehicles, we would also like to see the innovation be made accessible to a wider array of devices. Think of it this way: with this tech, you will no longer worry about fingerprints on your display–regardless of how often you use your device.
