The AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX3D Brings 3D V-Cache to Laptops

AMD has a new addition to its Ryzen 7000 series of processors with the Ryzen 9 7945HX3D. The long name refers to the new processor as essentially a Ryzen 9 7945HX with AMD’s 3D V-Cache tech, where you get a total of 145MB of cache–1MB L1, 16MB, and a whopping 128MB L3 Cache). The increase of cache is at L3–for comparison, the non-X3D version of the Ryzen 9 7945HX has 64MB of L3 cache, giving it a total of 81MB of cache.

3D V-Cache was first introduced on the Ryzen 7 5800X3D, where it stacks another layer of memory on the CPU die that is said to benefit games for faster processing of frames and to push higher frame rates.

Like its non-X3D version, the Ryzen 9 7945HX3D has 16 Zen4 cores, 32 threads, and a maximum boost clock of 5.4 GHz. While its default TDP is 55W, notebook manufacturers can opt for a maximum TDP of 75W depending on their needs. Because of the extra memory layer, the maximum operating temperature of the Ryzen 9 7945HX3D is lower at 89 degrees Celsius.

AMD claims as much as 15% better performance than the non-X3D version, but that remains to be seen with actual use.

The upcoming 2023 ASUS ROG Strix Scar 17 will be the first laptop to use the Ryzen 9 7945HX3D, which will be available globally on August 22.
