Xiaomi Loop LiquidCool Promises Better Thermal Management

Xiaomi Loop LiquidCool Promises Better Thermal Management

With smartphone processors delivering more power than ever, that translates to more heat produced. Various brands have their own cooling solutions, with Xiaomi having its own LiquidCool tech. Updating on their current solution, Xiaomi announced a new version called Loop LiquidCool, which improves thermal management by using heat pipes in two ways, resulting in double the cooling efficiency.

How does the new tech work? Heat from the processor causes liquid to evaporate, where hot air travels through a pipe towards the condenser area. That hot air turns into cool liquid, which goes back to the refill chamber and evaporator—and the cycle goes on.

Among the major differences in this design is that hot air and cool liquid travel in separate heat pipes, which improves overall thermal efficiency compared to current heat pipe solutions.

Another major change is its use of a Tesla Valve, which is described as a one-way valve that allow liquid to pass through the evaporator while blocking gases from moving in the opposite direction.

Xiaomi demonstrated Loop LiquidCool on a custom MIX 4, where a 30-minute Genshin Impact gameplay session with the game running at 60FPS in the highest graphic settings kept the phone’s temp below 47.7 degrees Celsius, which is 8.6 degrees Celsius lower than the older vapor chamber design.

Aside from the benefits it brings in managing thermals, Loop LiquidCool has a flexible form factor, allowing for phone designs to accommodate bigger batteries and camera modules.

Xiaomi aims to make Loop LiquidCool available to its products by the second half of 2022.
