Goodbye Airplane Mode? EU Discussing 5G on Airplanes

The days of needing to put your phone (or any device) into airplane mode might end soon, as the EU commission is currently discussing the possibility of allowing the use of 5G connectivity in airplanes.

According to a report by Gizmodo, the new rules will allow airplanes to provide 5G technology instead. With the ruling allowing passengers to use 5G on airplanes, this means that paying for data access inside the plane might be also a thing of the past.

In a press statement, EU Commissioner for the Internal Market Thierry Breton said that enabling 5G should enable innovative services for everyone and growth opportunities for European companies. “The sky is no longer a limit when it comes to possibilities offered by super-fast, high-capacity connectivity.”

To make this possible, airlines will use “Pico-Cell” special network equipment to route calls, texts, and data through a satellite network that connects the airplane to the ground-based mobile network.

The use of cellphones and other similar devices in airplanes has been prohibited since 1991, with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) explaining that cellphones could interfere with the navigation systems that pilots used. In 2017, the FCC insisted on the ban to “protect against radio interference to cell phone networks on the ground” according to a report by Business Insider.

However, UK Flight Safety Committee Dai Wittingham explained to BBC that based on experience, the risk for interference is not that big. “The recommendation has always been that once you are in flight, devices should be in airplane mode.”

“We have a different set of frequencies for 5G, and there are lower power settings than those that have been allowed in the US. The traveling public wants 5G. The regulators will open up that possibility, but there will be steps that will be taken to ensure that whatever they do is safe,” Wittingham adds.

Should all things go to plan, the EU commission will make 5G technology accessible on airplanes by June 30, 2023.
