Qualcomm is no longer the number one Android chipmaker on its home turf, Mediatek has taken its crown as the number one chipmaker in the United States.
According to Mediatek’s report during its Dimensity 8000 series briefing, it is currently the number one chipmaker for Android devices in the United States, as shown by IDC statistics for Q4 2021. Its chips accounted for 51% of the market compared to Qualcomm’s 47%
In the said report, it shows that MediaTek’s surge was driven largely by sales of the Samsung Galaxy A12, Samsung Galaxy A32, and Motorola G Pure, which made up 51 percent of MediaTek devices sold in Q4 and 24 percent of the entire Android market in the US.
Moreover, MediaTek’s premium chips, like its flagship Dimensity 9000, have been successful in infiltrating the high-end Android device market. MediaTek claims its Dimensity 9000 chip is more powerful than Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 and many manufacturers and customers are buying it.
As for the global market, Qualcomm has already lost the top spot to MediaTek since 2020. However, it’s still a huge feat for the Taiwanese chipmaker to dethrone Qualcomm on its home turf, the United States of America.
