Microsoft Ends Support for Cortana for Windows

With Bing having the powers of ChatGPT, there are questions regarding the fate of Cortana, the virtual assistant of Microsoft that also utilizes Bing. A few years after ending support for Cortana for mobile, Microsoft has decided to end it’s support for Windows as well.

“We are making some changes to Windows that will impact users of the Cortana app. Starting in late 2023, we will no longer support Cortana in Windows as a standalone app,” Microsoft said in a support document, adding that this will take in effect this August.

Despite ending support for Cortana for Windows, Microsoft said that Cortana will remain available in Outlook and Teams mobile apps, as well as in Teams displays and rooms.

Because of this change, Microsoft is directing affected users to try the AI-powered Bing and Bing Chat, Windows 11 voice access, Microsoft 365 Copilot, and Windows Copilot.

Microsoft’s slow abandonment of Cortana in the past few years is a clear indication that it is channeling it’s resources towards AI—especially with Microsoft joining Meta, Google, and OpenAI as the frontrunners when it comes to developing AI.

“We are excited to keep innovating and using AI to help you work smarter and faster. We hope you enjoy the new ways to use AI to save time and focus on what matters most to you,” Microsoft adds in its support document.
