What Inside the Box?

If you’ve seen our unboxing for the G5s Plus before, then you should be pretty familiar with the packaging of the device. It’s rather color and stands out from the usual pristine white cardboard boxes we’ve come accustomed to but everything else is pretty standard in terms of an unboxing experience. Slice through the protective seal of the box, open it up, and you’ll be greeted by Moto G5s. The device comes with the standard accessories that most phones come with these days, which include:

  • Quick Start Guide
  • Warranty Information
  • Micro USB Cable
  • Wall Charger
  • Earphones
  • SIM Ejector Tool

Initial Impressions: Pint-Sized Moto Mid-Ranger

In terms of looks, you’re pretty much getting the same design language that Moto devices have been rocking for awhile now. They’re one of the few brands that haven’t switched to having an extended 18:9 display, so you’re getting the width of devices with the standard 16:9 display. Like its bigger brother, you’ve got a metal build with chrome accents on its edges. The G5s curves just enough to make it feel comfortable in the hands, which is helped along with its smaller dimensions that measure in at 150 x 73.5 x 9.5 mm.

For the button and port layout, you have the power button and volume rocker on the right side of the device.

On the left is where you’ll find the access to the SIM tray and, unfortunately, you’re going to have to choose between an extra SIM or more storage.

You’ll find the 3.5mm headphone jack up top.

While the micro USB port and speaker grille can be found on the bottom of the device.

On the back of the device is where you’ll find the 16-megapixel camera with an aperture of f/2.0, which is equipped with phase detection autofocus and an LED flash. Just like the G5s Plus, the camera array sticks out from the device’s chassis and we really hope it doesn’t get scuffed up in the process of reviewing the G5s.

The front of the phone is dominated by the 5.2-inch IPS LCD panel at Full HD resolution, which gives the device really good pixel density at 424 pixels per inch. The colors have a good pop with decent blacks to give it a base and, since it is an IPS display, you’ve good viewing angles too.

Above the display is where you’ll find the 5-megapixel front camera with an f-stop of f/2.0 and its own LED flash as well.

Since the Moto G5s has the standard 16:9 display, it’s got room for the fingerprint scanner on its bottom bezel though the device does employ on-screen navigation keys.

Under the hood of the Moto G5s is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 processor, which has been paired with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of expandable storage. Yes, we know that the 430 has been around for what seems like ages but it is still a staple for devices in this price range and should have enough power for day-to-day use plus a bit of light gaming. What we love about Moto devices is that they run on an almost pure Android experience and, in the case of the G5s, you’re getting Android Nougat 7.1 though it should be getting an Oreo update soon.

For juice, the Moto G5s has a 3000mAh battery that should be enough to get you through the day.

That’s pretty much it for our quick peek at the Motorola Moto G5s, which is currently priced at Php 10,999. By the time you read this, we should already be running a few of our standard synthetic benchmarks so do check back in a couple of days for its full review.
