Video Player Apps Greatly Affected by Poor Connectivity

With the increasing dependency of people on their mobile phones, having a good and reliable connection is crucial for a seamless mobile app experience. While developers create mobile apps that can benefit users in different ways, Opensignal’s latest analysis explains how poor connectivity can affect the use of these apps–with special emphasis with video player apps.

For starters, Opensignal points out that the drop in app session time is more prevalent with poor WiFi connections than poor mobile connections–despite that smartphone users experience the latter more than the former. This shows that when it comes to connectivity, Filipinos still prioritize WiFi more over data.

As for which apps are greatly affected by poor WiFi or mobile connections, video player apps like Netflix are the ones that suffer the most with a -60% and -61% app session time for WiFi and mobile respectively. This does not come as a surprise, given the advent of 4K and HDR10 content that consume more data than 1080p video streams.

Given that most Filipinos use WiFi more often than mobile, the drop in app session time on other apps is more prevalent–with the biggest difference being evident with social media apps like Facebook.

Going back to video player apps, those using mobile connectivity will most likely uninstall them on day 1 at 31%. This shows that users will uninstall video player apps when they see that their connection cannot handle the streaming demands of these apps.
