Intel Kills “i” in Core Branding, Adds Ultra Instead

Ahead of the unveiling of its 14th-gen Meteor Lake chips, Intel is updating how it brands its Core series of processors, dropping the “i” and adding Ultra for its high-performance processors. This is the first time in 15 years that Intel is updating its branding scheme and the use of the Core Ultra branding appears to match how Apple designates its most powerful M-series chips.

Starting with Meteor Lake, Intel processors will simply be known as Core 3, Core 5, Core 7, and Core 9, making it simpler–and similar to how AMD brands its Ryzen processors. Intel explains that the decision to rebrand its processors is to “better align with customer requests.”

While the Core Ultra series is meant to be more powerful than the regular Core processors, Intel said that both can be equipped with Intel’s Arc graphics, so that also means Meteor Lake processors should get a boost in integrated GPU performance as well.

Prior to updating the branding of its Core series processors, Intel dropped the Pentium and Celeron branding late last year to go for a more straightforward “Intel Processor” branding that will refer to the brand’s “Essential” line, which consists of entry-level computers.

Intel has yet to give a timeline on when Meteor Lake processors will release, but given their appearance at COMPUTEX 2023, we should expect them by the end of the year.
