Faster Than Home Internet: Samsung Sets World Record For 5G Speed

Samsung, as of today, has officially set a world record when it comes to 5G network speeds over its mmWave network. This could cause a paradigm shift in the way we perceive internet speeds and could put pressure on telcos to live up to the expectations set by cutting-edge hardware. Just how fast, is FAST?

The test was performed in Australia in partnership with NBN Co, a forward-thinking organization that specializes in internet connectivity; whether it’s for residential use or enterprise-grade technology. During the aforementioned testing period, the device achieved an average download speed of 1.75 Gbps and download speed of 61.5 Mbps. Peak download speeds climbed up to 2.7 Gbps which is a whopping number that most, if not all people would be extremely happy with.

It’s quite easy to lay out the numbers but more difficult to imagine how this would be like. For context, your average cinematic, uncompressed Full HD movie can range from 4-8GB. At 1.75 Gbps, this can be downloaded in just 36.57 seconds according to the OMNI Calculator. Keep in mind that we’re using average and not peak speeds here. That’s definitely astounding beyond compare.

However, the hardware in this Samsung 5G record is one thing and telco support is another. The average 5G download speed in the country is somewhat competitive at 150.7 Mbps but still far from the hardware’s full potential. We’re looking forward to seeing this number grow over the years to make cloud-based technologies more reliable than ever.
