Facebook Takes Another Hit with Photo API Bug

Photos from over 6.8 million accounts were compromised

It is not a great year for Facebook: from hacking incidentsĀ and court casesĀ comes another bug that compromised the posted photos of over 6.8 million accounts.

In its latest report, Facebook explained that they discovered a photo API bug that let third-party apps gain access to more photos than usual fromĀ September 13 to September 25, 2018. It is a serious bug as it compromised not just posted photos, but also the users’ unposted photos.Ā AroundĀ 876 developers of up to 1,500 apps took advantage of the said bug according to Facebook.

As a response, Facebook “will be rolling out tools for app developers that will allow them to determine which people using their app might be impacted by this bug.” The social media giant will be working with these developers to determine which apps gained unauthorized access to users’ photos, both posted and unposted.

Aside from this measure, Facebook is recommending all of its users to log in an check which apps haveĀ access to their photos.
