Did Qualcomm Just Rebrand the Snapdragon 695?

The Snapdragon 695 was a popular 5G mid-range processor that’s close to 3 years old and is replaced by the Snapdragon 6 Gen 1. You would think that Qualcomm will retire the Snapdragon 695 already–but that’s not the case with the silently-announced Snapdragon 6s Gen 3.

Looking through the key specs of the 6s Gen 3, it is based on a 6nm TSMC process and has a 2/6 configuration with two Kryo 660 Gold cores and six Kryo 660 Silver cores. It has a similar architecture to the Snapdragon 695, but Qualcomm increased the clock speed of the 6s Gen 3’s Kryo 660 Gold cores to 2.3Ghz and Kryo 660 Silver cores to 2.0Ghz.

Save for the higher CPU clock speeds, the 6s Gen 3 is identical to the 695, which means that video recording is limited to Full HD 60FPS. That’s a major handicap of the Snapdragon 6s Gen 3 in 2024 unless Qualcomm intends to market the processor for budget 5G phones. Aside from that, this also means that it’s limited to LPDDR4X RAM and UFS 2.2 storage.

We don’t know which phones will use the Snapdragon 6s Gen 3, but we like to warn everyone that this is not a new processor–you’re better off with a phone that uses a Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 since you get a more efficient 4nm process and 4K video recording.
