Samsung Overtakes Intel as the World’s Biggest Chipmaker

All thanks to its memory chips

For the first time since 1992, Intel is no longer the biggest chipmaker in the world. That title in 2018 belongs to Samsung, which reported a $69 billion sales in chips for 2017 in comparison to Intel’s $63 billion total chip sales.

While Intel is more focused on manufacturing computer chips and Samsung is more into making memory and flash storage, the rise of mobile phones and computers using SSD and flash memory helped Samsung garner more sales than Intel. In fact, the majority of phones, tablets, and laptops use memory chips and/or SSD drives manufactured by Samsung.

The news is not really surprising, especially if you consider Samsung’s 2017Q4 profits.
