LRT1, LRT2 Fare Hike To Take Effect on August 2

After NLEX officially implemented its new round of toll hikes last June 15, the DoTR announced that both the LRT1 and LRT2 will implement a fare hike effective August 2. “We at the Department of Transportation (DOTr) believe that this fare adjustment will contribute to maintaining affordable mass transportation services for the two commuter-train lines,” Assistant Secretary for Railways Jorjette Aquino said.

The approved fare hike for both LRT1 and LRT2 includes a minimum boarding fee of Php 13.29 (from Php 11) and a per kilometer fare of Php 1.21 (from Php 1.00). While the fees were initially approved last April, President Bongbong Marcos ordered the fare hike to be deferred since there’s a need for a study on how the fare hikes will impact commuters.

However, its formal implementation starting August 2 is due to the country’s improvements in employment and inflation rate.

The last time the LRT2 had approved fare hikes was in 2015, while the LRT1 filed for fare hikes in 2016, 2018, 2020, and 2022–all of which were deferred. With the fare adjustment, the LRTA is looking to allocate around Php 110 million for maintenance, operating expenses, and the repair and upkeep of crucial rail systems and facilities.
